Curacao Could Become Spaceport

The Caribbean offers sun, surf, scuba and — soon, perhaps — space flights!

Many people come to the Caribbean to get away from it all, but in a few years travelers to Curacao could be taking that to a whole new level. By 2014, the Caribbean island could become home to a spaceport offering tourists space flights, Wired magazine reports. For a mere $98,000, space tourists could board a two-seat Lynx spacecraft operated by Space Experience Curacao and lift off for a suborbital flight to about 328,000 feet above the Earth.

$199 Rooms at New Hyatt Regency Curacao

The Hyatt Regency Curacao, opening on April 20, is offering $199 rooms to introduce the resort to travelers and also is dangling a free night when you book four or more nights anytime between April 20 and Dec. 22. The latter deal also includes continental breakfast for up to two adults and two kids and a room upgrade.

The 350-room Hyatt Regency Curacao is located in the exclusive Santa Barbara Plantation community and will feature three restaurants, an Atabei Spa, full-service marina, the island’s only 18-hold championship resort golf course, and a Camp Hyatt facility with multiple pools, fitness center, a jogging trail, tennis and volleyball.

Aruba, Curacao Look Beyond Oil, Seek Green Energy

Even the biggest fans of Aruba and Curacao must admit that it’s jarring for visitors to see the big oil refineries on these islands spewing tons of pollutants across the otherwise brilliant blue Caribbean skies.

It’s part of the reality of living in a world fueled by hydrocarbons, and some of the fuel made here is destined for U.S. gas tanks. However, its good to know that both islands are also taking steps toward a greener future.

The Tera Kora and Playa Kanoa wind farms in Curacao, for example, will soon put out a combined 30 megawatts of clean power, and Aruba also is building a 30 megawatt wind farm — a great legacy for future generations of residents of two islands where Dutch heritage and steady trade winds makes alternative energy projects like these a natural fit.
