January Events at the American Museum of Natural History

The American Museum of Natural History routinely hosts discussions, workshops and events that build upon both the permanent and special exhibits at the Museum.

This January there are several events geared toward families with children, including Wild, Wild World: Wolves where children can meet an Arctic gray wolf on January 23, 2010 while learning about the importance of wolves to the ecosystem.

AMNH’s adult programs cover a range of topics, from the space and science related talks that you would expect to more diverse ones such as food (consider Curry Economics on January 14, 2010 featuring a moderated discussion about the role food plays in economic development) and even perfume (like Aromatics Along the Silk Road on January 20, 2010).

How To Spend a Weekend in New York City

The New York Times Travel section routinely features a 36 Hours column where they present an idea of how to spend 36 hours in a chosen destination. Their hour-by-hour itinerary runs from Friday evening until mid-day on Sunday — essential hand-holding you through a weekend getaway. I love the confidence of these articles: they make very specific recommendations for hotels, restaurants, and attractions and really maximize a short trip.

This week’s 36 Hours in New York City has visitors experiencing a show at Lincoln Center, visiting the High Line, shopping in Brooklyn and checking out some of the Lower East Side’s art museums and galleries, not to mention eating delicious meals to fuel all the activities. You’ll need a vacation from your vacation if you cram all of those things into one weekend, but the good news is you can always rest when you’re back home.

Do-It-Yourself Lower East Side Walking Tour from National Geographic Traveler

As part of its On Foot series of walking tours, National Geographic Traveler has put together a walking tour of New York City’s Lower East Side. The DIY walking tour features 12 different neighborhood spots, including shops, restaurants, markets and museums. Their choices do a great job of reflecting the neighborhood’s immigrant roots (including a person favorite of mine, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum), as well as the neighborhood’s great shopping and dining. The only downside — printing the map is easy, but it doesn’t automatically include the addresses and descriptions of each of the spots on your printout, so you’ll have to add your own notes to the map.

Free Audio Tour of Central Park

Visitors to Central Park have one more way to learn about nearly 50 different landmarks and buildings in the park through a series of celebrity-narrated audio clips that are just a phone call away. Whoopi Goldberg talks about Wollman Rink and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Sarah Jessica Parker introduces visitors to The Pond, and you can learn about Strawberry Fields from Yoko Ono, simply by dialing 646-862-0997 and pressing the appropriate location number followed by the # sign. You’ll find green signs at various spots throughout Central Park with dialing instructions and numbers, or you can print out this map of Central Park with the location numbers (and celebrity spokespeople) already listed on it. Most of the clips are about 2 minutes long, and there’s no charge to listen, aside from the minutes used on your cell phone plan. The phone number is accessible from cell phones, as well as landlines (feel free to call from your desk if you want to daydream about being in Central Park). Many of the celebrities were chosen due to personal connections to the places they talk about in Central Park (it’s no surprise that John McEnroe has something to say about Central Park’s Tennis Courts!) giving the audio segments a personal, as well as informative tone.
