One of the most popular Italian regions for cooking classes is Tuscany. On Select Italy’s Become a Tuscan Chef for a Day (details and booking), based in Florence, students first visit the central market where they taste foods and buy ingredients for the recipes. The 3-hour hands-on class is held in a professional kitchen near the market where students prepare seasonal dishes. At the end of class, students get to eat the meal they’ve prepared. Andrea Guglielmino, of Select Italy, describes his experience with the class:

In one word – fun. Chef Giovanni and Andrea were great! They know how to entertain the crowd. We first visited the Mercato Centrale where we tasted different kinds of Tuscan oils and we bought all the ingredients for our recipes. The Menu was amazing and easy at the same time: Tiramisu, Bruschetta and Fresh Home Made Pasta (From Us!!!) with a delicious ragu. Really fun and useful. Perfect for families too.

Even though 4 of the coastal trails are currently closed, you can
still access some good walking trails. We took red trail no# 6 from
Manarola to Volastra and on to Corniglia. The trail takes you up into the hills
and through the grape vines and is totally stunning. We had the trail to
ourselves and it took us 2.5 hrs with a few stops.

Why go now? Although these regions saw an increase in tourism last year, they are still fairly off-the-beaten-path places. They’re working to attract more tourists so tourist services are increasing but you can still experience the warm hospitality and traditions that these places offer. If you’ve been to some of the top places to go in Italy, consider one of these less-visited places in your 2012 Italy travels. I’ll be revisiting them myself this year.

Visitors will find artisan crafts and small shops where they can buy unique gifts, many family-oriented traditional events to enjoy without huge crowds, and unique sights like the world’s biggest electric Christmas tree above Gubbio or an artisan mechanical presepe (nativity display). You can even see the place where Saint Francis is said to have created the first living nativity pageant.

New Year’s Eve is an exciting time to be in Italy. Many cities and towns have concerts in a piazza, starting around 9 or 10PM with a grand fireworks display and often a brindisi, or toast, at midnight. These festivities often go on all night. Remember that major events often draw huge crowds so plan to arrive early, watch from afar, or choose a small town celebration. Driving and parking may be difficult (or impossible) so check out public transportation options ahead of time and remember that they’ll be crowded, too.
