Fastnet Line Sinks

Fastnet Line, a.k.a. “The People’s Ferry”, has terminated operations. The sole ship “Julia” was already berthed for the winter in Cork, now it looks as if its revenue-earning days with Fastnet Line are over for good. After court wrangles and severe commercial problems the whole operation has ended after less than two years service. While the operators describe this as a major blow for tourism in Cork, Kerry and South Wales, questions about the commercial viability of the service have been raised before.

Dublin’s Chinese New Year Carnival – A Damp Firecracker?

For quite some years we attended the Chinese New Year Carnival in Dublin – an all-singing, all-(dragon)-dancing festival in the inner city. Yesterday we took some friends along … and were somehow disappointed. When we attended, the festivities were held in Wolfe Tone Square on the Northside. Now the have relocated to the Southside, just across the Liffey and smack-bang in Dublin’s “cultural quarter” Temple Bar. Which might have been less-than brilliant an idea. At least the Chester Beatty Library…

Corlea Trackway – A Mystery in the Bog

So, you think today’s roads in Ireland are bad? Look at the Corleas Trackway and you’ll revise quickly. It must have been a bumpy ride through the bog on this wooden causeway. From where to where we do not know. And we also fail to find out why the road was built at all. And who exactly built it. But: At its time the Corlea Trackway was a construction that would have rivalled many better known monuments. The effort the constructors went into were enormous. And it might have been “just” a ritual thing … not a highway to get through the bogs quicker and drier.

Navan Fort is a puzzler … quite a number of people turn up in the frankly bland town of Navan (County Meath) to have a look at it. But despite the name it is not there. It is in County Armagh, a bit further north. But well worth the extra mile you’ll have to drive if you headed for Navan first. Why? Well, Navan Fort or Emain Macha was one of the most important places of Celtic Ireland … though today you’ll be hard pressed to realize this.
