National Gallery of Greece Robbed; Picasso Stolen

Adding to Greece’s burdens, the National Gallery of Greece in Athens reports that two items have been stolen from the museum just prior to dawn Monday morning.

The National Gallery should not be confused with the National Archaeological Museum which most visitors to Greece see. The National Gallery hosts more modern works by both Greek and foreign artists, primarily paintings, and they had just hosted an international exhibition including pieces by Albrecht Durer and others. As of this post, the exact items had not been identified, and it is not clear if they were part of the permanent collections or the recent exhibit. Update: The Athens Macedonia News Agency is reporting that one of the missing items is an early Picasso which was a gift to the Museum.

Variety Cruises Adds New Ships on Greek Itineraries

Variety Cruises, a small-ship cruise line, has expanded their fleet with two new megayachts, and both will get a taste of Greek waters in 2012.

The Harmony G will be focusing on the Adriatic, touching on Corfu during its “Adriatic Voyage” cruise launching in July 2012.

A sexy triple-masted 250 cabin “sail cruiser” dubbed the “Panorama II” will enjoy Greece on its maiden voyage “Aegean Odyssey” cruise coming up in June of 2012.

The “old” Panorama will return to Greek waters and explore the eastern Greek islands on its “Dodecanese Mosaic” cruise.

While Variety is promoting the new ships right now, it’s handy to remember that new routes and new ships often equal new discounts to build up awareness … so don’t be afraid to ask.

“Starvation Recipes” Cookbook Tops Lists in Greece

It’s not often that a cookbook devoted to the bottom tier of cooking makes headlines – but Greeks are rushing to embrace a cookbook enshrining some very “austere” recipes.

While it is only in Greek so far, the book by Eleni Nikolaidou draws from other times in Greece’s history when food options were slim – and while the current Greek financial crisis doesn’t match the German Occupation of the 1940s or the rigors of the civil war that followed, there are enough similarities to make it ring true. And Greeks of today may be reaching for a volume that remind them that hey, we’ve been through worse.
