Carbon-conscious travelers will love the small island of Hideensee, a car-free island in Germany’s Baltic Sea close to Rügen. Leave your car in Schaprode and take a water cab or ferry to Hiddensee, then explore the solitude and natural beauty of the rugged island by foot, bike or horse drawn carriage. There are rustic cabins and cottages on the island and restaurants serving local food. Don’t leave Hiddensee without trying its local treat: Sanddorn (sea-buckthorns), little orange berries that grow on shrubs all over the dunes of Hiddensee. Sanddorn contains 15 times more Vitamin C than an orange, and the berries come in such tasty forms like jams, honey, juices, liquors, and oils.

If you look for some cool designer stores, head to Hackescher Markt in the historic heart of Berlin; first of all there are the Hackesche Hoefe, an ensemble of historic courtyards filled with special interest stores, cafes, and art galleries. Don’t miss the streets surrounding the courtyards, like Weinmeisterstrasse, Alte Schoenhauser Strasse, Rosenthaler Strasse and Muenzstrasse, all home to cool boutiques with local designer fashion, books, accessories, vintage, jewelry and shoes.

Berlin celebrates the holidays with no less than 60 Christmas markets; from romantic, and historic, to organic, and fun, there is a Christmas market for everyone in Berlin

I recommend taking a walk along the boulevard “Unter den Linden” in historic Berlin-Mitte; if you start at Alexanderplatz and walk all the way to the Brandenburg Gate, you will pass four of some of the most popular Christmas markets in Berlin: a fun Christmas market for the whole family on Alexanderplatz, a historic Christmas fair in front of Berlin’s City Hall, and a “Nostalgic Christmas Market” at the Opera House.
