I like driving in France, particularly because of the huge road signs that advertise the local attractions so effectively. These enormous metal billboards with their simple graphics are everywhere. Sometimes the sign is for a specific attraction, like Pierrefonds with its extraordinary chateau between Compiègne and Senlis; sometimes it’s a general one — like the Sologne and its wonderful lakes; or maybe a historical event such as ‘Le Camp du Drape d’Or’ — or the Field of the Cloth of Gold.
