After a successful run at the British Museum, the Moctezuma II Time and Destiny of a Ruler exhibit is now on display at the Templo Mayor Museum in Mexico City. This major exhibition explores Mexica (Aztec) civilization through the divine, military and political role of the last elected ruler, Moctezuma II, who reigned from 1502 to 1520. Ninety-eight pieces were added to the exhibit since its move to Mexico City, among them a colossal sculpture of the goddess Tlaltecuhtli which was discovered in 2006, now on display for the first time to the public. This monolith is 13.7 by 11.8 feet and weighs twelve tons. Besides being the largest Aztec monument found to present, it’s the only one that conserves its original colors.
