Titanic Awards: Daisann McLane

Travel News

A few months ago, we introduced you to Doug Lansky and his upcoming book project: The Titanic Awards. Doug has been interviewing intrepid travelers about their absolute worsts–the places they’d never return, terrible tourist attractions, inane airports–you get the idea. Today he interviewed our Real Travel columnist Daisann McLane, who has seen more worsts than anyone we know (as the author of the book Cheap Hotels, she should know). Take for example, this bedspread, which burns your eyes a bit just to look at it.

badbedspread.jpgWorst Hotel Bedspread: Barnacle Bed and Breakfast, Big Pine Key, Florida. My book, Cheap Hotels, had a whole chapter devoted to the worst bedspreads I slept on during my six years as The New York Times
Frugal Traveler. This one was at least clean (while researching, I
discovered that the average US hotel chain usually washes its spreads
only once every 60 days!) but aesthetically, it was like coming home
every night to a velvet cat painting.

You can read the rest of Daisann’s worsts here. And you can find Daisann’s Real Travel column and read Keith Bellows’ interview with Doug Lansky in the April issue of Traveler.
